Getting All Caught Up

And a happy new year, everyone! Been a non-stop whirlwind of activity, I tell you! Now, where was I?

Oh yes! I was in the middle of recording the song for my short film "Dale Crawford" with the lovely and talented Marykate O'Neil and her great backing band the Wicked Bomahs. We laid down the tracks with Don Piper at his studio in Brooklyn in a late-December session that was a pure joy. Now all I have to do is wait for the Spring so I can finish filming the blasted thing...

And speaking of finishing things, the first issue of DWNY Magazine is finally done and available online! As you may recall from my previous posts, I co-edited it as well as contributing an essay, a short story and the cover photograph. And if you're still confused about what all this "Doctor Who" malarkey is about, well, the much-ridiculed Sci-Fi Channel just picked the series up and will start showing it in March. Hooray! (The announcement was made in wonderfully tacky style on Thursday on the BBC's website. Must be seen to be believed!)

Moving back to music, everyone's favorite Seattle supergroup, The Minus 5 is coming out with a new album next month. The first single, "Twilight Distillery" is up on the Yep Roc website for your listening pleasure, and it's a good one! Of course, the one track I've been impatiently waiting for is "With a Gun", which I've only heard The Minus 5 play once (they performed it with Wilco once during their fantastic Bowery Ballroom show in 2003), but it made quite an impression with me. Hopefully it'll live up to my memory - I'll find out next month!

And the beat goes on - Jen is off for two weeks on a business trip to Florida starting Tuesday, so I decided to take a little mini-trip of my own to Chicago, during which I'll be seeing the Vulgar Boatmen at Schubas, visiting some friends, eating some deep-dish pizza, walking down Clark Street, and generally enjoying the Midwest a little bit more before I head back up here to NYC. Should be fun! More when I return...
